Video presentation: medication safety

Medication safety: New challenges in the 21st century.

Professor Libby Roughead, a researcher at the University of South Australia, presented this lecture in 2013 as part of the university’s public lecture program to share the university’s research with the community. The audience comprised members of the public, as well as university staff and students.

In the lecture, Professor Roughead describes how our increased reliance on the use of medicines in the past 30 years has had a number of negative implications for society. She highlights how medication safety challenges in the 21st century are very different to the safety challenges in the 20th century. She emphasises the need for structural change to resolve medication safety problems, as the systems to address medication safety that were established in the 20th century – when the medicines were generally used independently of each other – are now inadequate for the challenges of the 21st century where significant numbers of people are living with multiple chronic illnesses and taking multiple medicines.

PowerPoint presentation: WHO Guide to Good Prescribing

A meeting entitled Guide to Good Prescribing and Improving the Use of Antibiotics was held in Ecuador in November 2020.

This meeting was organised by ISIUM member, Belén Mena, under the auspices of University Central del Ecuador, ReAct Latin America (RLA), the Latin American Association of Medical Faculties (AFEME) and ISIUM.  One of the aims of the meeting was to create a space of interested people to widen use of the Guide to Good Prescribing in medical schools in Latin America and to work to update it where necessary.

Hans Hogerzeil made an excellent presentation on the Guide. A PDF of this presentation can be downloaded here.

His recorded presentation (spoken in English but with Spanish ‘slides’) is available at https://fb.watch/2gIu3GUZMp/
