The latest ISIUM conversation – Voices of experience on rational use of medicines … looking back, thinking forward – is now available.

Held in July 2025, this session brings together some of the ‘elders’ of the Rational Use of Medicines (RUM) community to reflect on what RUM is, where it came from, and the challenges involved in ensuring medicines are used appropriately and effectively.

The irrational use of medicines remains one of the most pressing (and persistent) challenges in global health. Despite decades of effort, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to report that over half of all medicines are prescribed, dispensed, or sold inappropriately, and that at least half of all patients do not take them as directed. This misuse—whether through overuse, underuse, or incorrect use—not only wastes precious resources, but also causes significant harm to individuals and communities.
