Mary was a key member of the Melbourne group that developed the concept of therapeutic guidelines in the 1970s; she was appointed the founding Chief Executive Officer of Therapeutic Guidelines Limited (TGL) in 1996. Under her leadership it was transformed from a government-funded venture into an independent not-for-profit organisation that is completely self-funding, and flourishing. She succeeded in having Therapeutic Guidelines embedded in the Australian health system; she liaised with WHO to provide health workers in developing countries with free access to the Guidelines; she instituted an editorial training program to help build capacity among health professionals from low- and middle-income countries. She was also actively involved in the development of Australia’s original National Medicines Policy.
